Michael – The Reluctant Leader
Sector: I.T. Industry
Challenge:
- To enable this shy, rather introverted leader to make a professional impact in a very customer-focused environment.
- To help him shift his focus from relying on his own considerable intellectual and technical expertise to communicating more clearly with his team.
- To strengthen the respective capability of his team by identifying their gaps in terms of skill and capability.
Our Approach:
- Nine-month programme of executive coaching with the leader.
- Clear objectives set out up-front and monitoring of progress against these objectives over the nine-month period.
- Facilitated sessions with his teams to build cohesiveness and collaboration.
- 360° feedback sessions helped to clarify and agree the key areas upon which this leader needed to focus, including how to build collaborative relationships, how to “inspire” the team, and how to acknowledge and recognise other people’s contributions and achievements.
Outcomes:
- Within nine months of beginning this programme, this leader was promoted to one of the most senior positions in this global IT house.
- He left a superbly-organised and highly-motivated team behind him who are now capable of running the division without his regular interventions.
- His succession manager was appointed Vice-President, and commented that this promotion was considerably helped by the excellent mentoring that this quiet leader gave to his successor.
- This leader’s ratings in the company’s own Employee Satisfaction Survey showed marked improvements in all key development areas (building collaborative relationships, inspiring teams, and acknowledging and recognising other contributions and achievements).
